In a speech to the European Parliament today, Conservative MEP for London Marina Yannakoudakis congratulated the capital on having been selected to host the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

“Hosting two world class sporting events in the space of 5 years is good news not only for London and the UK, but also for the whole of Europe,” said Marina.

Marina went on to say “I am proud of my city and I am proud of my country. As such I cringe at proposals to include the EU flag on sportsmen’s national jerseys.

“When British athletes mount the podium to receive their gold medals, the only flag I want to see on their uniforms is the Union Jack.”
