A London Conservative MEP today welcomed Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech in which he pledge to take a reformed EU-UK relationship to the people in a referendum before the end of 2018.

Marina Yannakoudakis MEP said: “The Prime Minister is right to point out that the EU, including the UK, will not be able to compete against emerging markets without radical reform.

“As the EU’s largest financial centre, London needs room to grow, not to be stifled by complex rules and excessive legislation from Brussels.

“By pledging to put Britain’s relationship right with the EU and then taking this new partnership to a vote in a referendum in the first half of the next parliament, David Cameron is guaranteeing the ongoing prosperity of the UK and ensuring that our future ties with Europe, if approved, will have the consent of the British people.”
