A BETTER DEAL FOR RESIDENTS: Marina with candidate Gavin Barwell, right, and New Addington council candidate Tony Pearson, left.
Campaign’s going
well with Barwell!
MARINA and Croydon Central candidate Gavin Barwell discovered growing support for David Cameron’s Conservatives when they canvassed homes in New Addington.
People in the area have long felt it doesn’t get a fair deal from Croydon Council.  But Gavin, 38, who grew up in Croydon, has redressed the balance as the council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion. The father of three is former Chief Operating Officer of the Conservative Party.
Marina said: “Gavin has held a very senior post in the party but he’s never forgotten his Croydon roots and is working hard for the area where he has lived most his life,”

Springing
into action
AS one of London’s three Conservative Euro MPs, Marina will be visiting the party’s Spring Forum in Brighton on February 27th. If you wish to attend or want to get involved in the party’s activities register at conservatives.com.
SAVE HORSES FROM CRUEL TRANSPORT
MARINA Yannakoudakis is calling for an end to the cruel and unnecessary transportation of horses across Europe for slaughter.
Some 100,000 horses a year are subjected to extreme stress as they are forced to travel for up to 12 hours without rest, food or water.
Marina has signed a written declaration in the European Parliament calling for an urgent review of EU legislation governing the welfare of animals being transported to slaughter.
Marina said: “Like many Londoners I am an animal lover. I’m sure that the vast majority of us are horrified at the manner in which horses can be transported across the continent.
Imagine a 12-hour journey without rest, water or food and in stifling heat. Journeys such as these are inhumane and can lead to exhaustion, injury, pain suffering and stress.
"Within the UK, transporting a horse in a way that is detrimental to its welfare is a breach of the Animal Welfare Act 2006.
“Most of these journeys are completely unnecessary because slaughter facilities exist throughout Europe, so why are these horses being moved around like this?
“I have given my support to urgently reviewing and changing this legislation to make these loopholes a thing of the past.”
Making a stand on appointment of new EU Commissioners
ALONG with her fellow Conservative MEPs, Marina made a stand by abstaining on the appointment of 27 new EU Commissioners – because there was no
opportunity to vote on one candidate at a time. Members of the group of European Conservatives and Reformists decided this was the only action open to them because while some candidates were strong, others were weak.
The new Commissioners were appointed by 488 votes to 137, with 72 abstentions.
Marina said: “Although we support President Jose Manuel Barroso, we need to reform the Commission confirmation procedure to prevent a crass ‘take or leave it’ approach. Under current procedure, weak candidates are elected alongside strong ones. It is paramount to have full confidence in President Barroso’s entire team through individual election.”
ECR chairman Michal Kaminski said: “We have signalled our support for President Barroso, expressed our concerns about the competence of some of the new Commissioners, and conveyed our criticism of the confirmation procedure.”
A lesson for visiting law students

Debating the ethics of
banking babies’ blood
VITAL ISSUE: Marina with experts at stem cell debate
THE ethical dilemmas of ‘banking” umbilical cord blood from newborn babies were the subject of a debate attended by Marina in Strasbourg.
Stem cells in the blood can sometimes be used to treat genetic conditions. But there are fears that private banks may give parents unrealistic hopes.
The debate, sponsored by Marina in conjunction with German Christian Democrat MEP Peter Liese, took place with a world renowned panel of medical practitioners, including Prof Lukas Kenner from the Vienna Institute of Clinical Pathology and Prof Colin McGuckin, President of the Cell Therapy Research Institute.
Marina said: “Cord blood cell banking is a remarkable means of helping those who suffer from genetic diseases. However it is important to balance these benefits with concerns relating to the use of private blood banks.”
NEWLYWED CHRIS IS WOOING THE VOTERS!

A PASSION FOR POLITICS: Chris, centre, Marina, second from left, and Conservative activists in the Queen’s Park area of Hampstead and Kilburn
HAMPSTEAD and Kilburn candidate Chris Philp may be newly married - but that didn’t stop him from tearing himself away from bride Lizzy on Valentine’s weekend to join Marina on the doorstep.
Along with 20 Conservative activists they called on homes in Queen’s Park to listen to problems and win support.
Hampstead and Kilburn is a constituency we must win to make sure David Cameron is elected to 10 Downing Street. Chris, 33, is a dynamic entrepreneur and local campaigner who gets things done. He recently stopped the closure of Hampstead Police Station and is fighting to save the Royal Free Hospital’s specialist stroke unit.
