Women in the know
THERE was food for thought at a European information tea for women hosted in London by Marina.
Guests included Pauline Lucas (President of the Conservative Women’s Organisation), Valerie Whittaker (London Region Conservative Women’s Committee Chairman), Janice Lavery (Conservative London Regional Deputy Chairman Political) and Silvia Tannock (wife of London MEP Charles Tannock).
After outlining some of her committee work, including how the economic downturn is affecting women and the controversial Maternity Leave Directive, Marina took part in a lively Q & A session.

PASSIVE SMOKING
HARMS OUR KIDS
PASSIVE smoking causes 22,000 new cases of asthma and wheezing in British children each year.
This shocking statistic was revealed at a seminar in Brussels on the dangers children face from inhaling tobacco fumes.
Marina Yannakoudakis chaired the event, which was sponsored by the Royal College of Physicians.
With smoking now banned in public places, researchers fear children are now subjected to more passive smoking in the home.
Studies by the College have found that children who grow up with parents or siblings who smoke are 90 per cent more likely to become smokers themselves.
Spanish and Finnish experts were also present at the seminar aimed at discussing the issue before it is debated at the European Parliament.
Marina said: “This event was a way of discussing a crucial health issue for the next generation and learning about the ways in which passive smoking harms the health of our children.”

HELPING TO BRING
THE EU TO BOOK!
Marina organised and hosted a meeting with members of the London Region of the Institute of Chartered Accountants at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The group were taken on a tour then discussed European issues with Conservative MEPs Kay Swinburne, Syed Kamall, Charles Tannock and Marina.
Marina said: “It is vital to meet regularly with professionals, to listen to their views and to keep them informed about the good work being done by London’s Conservative MEPs on behalf of British taxpayers.”

Cross-border protection
for the victims of crime
VICTIMS of sexual and violent crime will get Europe-wide protection under a new EU directive which Marina is helping to formulate.
The European Protection Order directive aims to increase the safety of victims or potential victims who move between EU Member States.
These are people who may be threatened with murder or physical, sexual or psychological abuse.
Marina said: “It is vital that the European Protection Order has a sound and coherent legal basis across all the member states before we proceed. Without this prerequisite, individual victims will have no confidence that another member state will successfully uphold the order.”
BP's Oil spill
MARINA wants a fully independent inquiry into the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
She thinks any probe should take into account the ageing oil rig platforms in the North Sea and North Atlantic, and the severe economic and environmental impact any leaks from them could have on the UK.
In light of US President Barack Obama’s criticisms of BP, Marina said: “One important fact that seems to be routinely overlooked in all the coverage of this awful disaster is that BP is a truly multinational company. BP is now 39 per cent US owned, with 22,000 US- based employees, compared with 10,000 workers based here in the UK.”
Prime Minister David Cameron has said BP should take all sensible and reasonable steps to deal with the catastrophe.
She's just the medicine
THE importance of using antibiotics responsibly - only taking them for bacterial infections and always completing the course - will be stressed at a second annual European Antibiotics Awareness Day.
Marina met Dr Marc Sprenger, Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to discuss organising an exhibition in the European Parliament later on in the year.
The first awareness day was last November. Spreading the message is vital as bacteria can become drug resistant if medicines are not used correctly.
