NEW LIGHTBULBS NOT
SUCH A BRIGHT IDEA
EU measures to phase out traditional incandescent light bulbs are now well under way – but Marina Yannakoudakis has raised concerns about the dangers that may be posed by mercury in the new energy efficient flourescent replacements.
She has asked a question in the European Parliament about when its Scientific Committee will be asked to investigate the risk posed.
Marina said: “The Directive to change light bulbs might have been made with good intentions but, as the saying goes, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Whilst we need to do more to help the environment this is one Directive that was not thought out.”
Women on the way out
A CRAZY plan to ban exit signs that only show a
male figure and replace them with men AND
women was proposed to the European
Parliament’s Women’s Committee.
Marina, who sits on the committee, was
amazed at the proposal.
She said: “A petitioner has created and
patented the new sign – in the name of equal
treatment. How costly!”
A winning performance in
the West End by-election!
CAMPAIGN STARS: Mark Field MP, Marina and canvassers
WITH next year’s General Election approaching fast, Marina is on the campaign trail once again.
She joined Mark Field MP and fellow activists campaigning for Westminster Council West End ward by-election candidate Jonathan Glanz. Jonathan topped the poll with a 357 majority.
MARINA’S TORY TEATIME TALK
Marina recently spoke to the Finchley
Conservative Women’s Tea about her EU work.
Working to find the missing of Cyprus
MARINA Yannakoudakis showed solidarity with Greek Cypriots forced from their homes in the 1974 invasion when she attended the annual rally for the town of Morphou on the island.
She was joined by Theresa Villiers MP and Councillor Brian Coleman, the Mayor of Barnet. The London Borough of Barnet is twinned with Morphou - which had to be abandoned during the Turkish occupation. The President of Cyprus, Dimitris Christofias, was also at the rally at the point where the green line is closest to Morphou.
Whilst on the island Marina was briefed by the British High Commissioner and met the Committee of Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), which is working to exhume, identify and return the remains of 1493 Greek Cypriots and 502 Turkish Cypriots listed as missing in the conflicts of 1963-1964 and 1974. Marina said: “There are almost 2000 people missing - sons, fathers and friends
HUNT FOR RELATIVES: Marina with committee members
of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. They deserve to be found and given proper respect. Their families need to have somewhere to go to mourn. This is not a political issue it’s a humanitarian one. The EU has given £1.8million to help, but time is running out. They rely on eye witnesses to find where the mass graves are, and 35 years down the line there are fewer survivors remaining. So it’s important the CMP’s work is carried out quickly.”
Her conference call
IN ACTION: Marina gives advice on the MEPs’ stall
Marina joined an estimated 12,000 activists at the Conservative Conference in Manchester.
She manned the Conservative MEPs’ stall where she was able to brief activists on the new grouping in the European Parliament.
Marina said: “Both Eric Pickles and William Hague gave strong speeches calling for a General Election and David Cameron set out our vision for change.”
Michael Kaminski, leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists group in the European Parliament, addressed a fringe meeting.
