Encouraging women into small business was the topic of a speech made by Marina Yannakoudakis MEP to the Harrow Women’s Conference organised today by the Harrow Women’s Centre.

Marina explained how she ran a successful business for 20 years while raising three children: “Entrepreneurship gives you the flexibility to do the other things in life, such as bringing up a family,” she said. “We need to give women the confidence and tools so that they can better juggle their work and home lives.”

Marina talked about the European Parliament report which she authored on Women and SMEs. She spoke in particular about the important role that mentors have to play in getting more women into business, especially through the EU&#45#supported European Network of Female Entrepreneurship Ambassadors. She also talked about the European Progress Microfinance Facility and how it can provide small loans to women to start up and grow their businesses.

Other aspects of Marina’s work in the European Parliament were discussed, including preventing domestic violence and offering help to victims, protecting children from abuse, especially child pornography and how to tackle human trafficking.
