Marina tells BBC’s Daily Politics programme that she has sympathy with Turkish protesters
In an interview with BBC 2’s Daily Politics programme today, Conservative MEP Marina Yannakoudakis expressed her concern for the clashes between protesters and police in Istanbul’s Gezi Park.
She told the programme: “I’m concerned. I have sympathy with protesters. They have a democratic right to protest and that’s part of living in a democracy.
“There are certain boxes that Turkey has to tick and democracy and human rights are at the top of the list. The area of women’s rights in Turkey still needs to be addressed, for example, they have forced marriages, they have honour killings still.”
When asked by the BBC’s Jo Coburn “Will Turkey ever join the EU?” Marina said, “There’s a way to go. We’ll see.”
