In a speech to the European Parliament today, London Conservative MEP Marina Yannakoudakis told fellow Euro MPs about the UK government’s efforts to improve water quality in Britain’s rivers, especially the River Thames. Speaking in Strasbourg, Mrs. Yannakoudakis said:

“I am pleased to note that in my home constituency of London the water quality of the River Thames is well on its way to meeting the goals set by the European Water Framework Directive.

“The British government has made the cleaning of our rivers a priority with a 110 million pound grant allocated to this objective.

“For whilst the EU can come up with goals and targets for our environment it is vital member states follow the UK example and take control of their own environmental programmes.”
